Wastewater Treatment Services for Massachusetts Residents

Wastewater treatment takes the dirty water from your property and cleans it up before it goes back into the environment. It’s a process that removes harmful elements like chemicals, solids, and bacteria from used water. At Clear Water Industries, we work across Massachusetts to handle all wastewater needs. We offer on-site waste water treatment products and maintenance, including products like the Waterloo Biofilter® system and Orenco onsite wastewater products. Clear Water Industries goes beyond maintenance, as we provide quarterly and annual inspections, adjustments, wastewater sampling, and state reporting.

What Is Wastewater, and Why Should You Care?

Wastewater comes from your daily activities — showers, toilets, sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, cooling operations, equipment cleaning, and so on. It is pretty much everywhere. Every time you flush a toilet or drain a bathtub, that water needs to go somewhere. If you’re not connected to a sewer system, your wastewater needs proper treatment right on your property. The water contains organic materials, cleaning products, and other byproducts that need proper handling.

When your wastewater isn’t treated properly, it can cause backup issues, system failures, property damage, and even contamination of nearby groundwater or streams. There’s also the unpleasant reality of odors and potential health hazards for your neighbors. Good wastewater management protects your property value, keeps your yard usable, and helps avoid costly emergency repairs.

Primary Wastewater Treatment

Primary treatment is the first step in cleaning wastewater. It starts when wastewater flows through screens that catch large objects and debris. Then, it moves to settling tanks, where gravity pulls heavier solids to the bottom, forming what we call “sludge.” Meanwhile, oils and lighter materials float to the top, where skimmers can remove them.

The process typically starts in the septic tank, where solid materials settle to the bottom, forming what is called “sludge.” Oils and lighter materials float to the top, creating a layer of “scum.” The clearer liquid in the middle then flows out for further treatment.

This basic physical separation removes many suspended solids from wastewater and begins breaking down organic materials. It’s simple but super effective as a first step.

Clear Water Industries can implement and help you maintain primary treatment systems scaled to your specific flow rates and contaminant loads. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; wastewater has unique characteristics that need to be addressed in a way that fits your needs.

Secondary Treatment

After primary treatment tackles the big pieces of waste, secondary treatment targets dissolved pollutants you can’t see. This stage uses helpful bacteria and microorganisms to eat the dissolved waste in your water.

Secondary treatment often happens in a leach field or soil absorption system, where beneficial soil bacteria continue breaking down contaminants. More advanced systems might include media filters, constructed wetlands, or aerobic treatment units that pump oxygen into the wastewater to speed up bacterial action. These processes typically remove 85-95% of the remaining organic pollution from your wastewater, making it much safer before it returns to the environment.

Your specific property — its soil conditions, available space, and proximity to wells or water bodies — needs a custom-designed secondary treatment approach. We’ll help you choose the right solution.

The Waterloo Biofilter® System

The Waterloo Biofilter® system takes your wastewater treatment to a whole new level. This system uses an absorbent filter medium made from foam pieces, creating a plentiful range of surface area where helpful bacteria can live and work. The foam pieces stay pretty dry, which means oxygen can reach the bacteria easily, making them highly efficient at cleaning wastewater.

What makes this system great? It handles flow fluctuations really well, uses way less energy than traditional systems, and takes up minimal space. The Biofilter breaks down tough organic compounds that other systems struggle with. It’s also incredibly low-maintenance, which is perfect for the busiest clients. That said, Clear Water Industries is available to provide any necessary maintenance, so be sure to reach out.

The system works amazingly well for homes with limited yard space, challenging soil conditions, or properties near sensitive water bodies. Want to see it in action? We’ve got examples from similar Massachusetts clients that show dramatic improvements in treatment efficiency and serious savings.

Orenco Onsite Solutions Are Reliable and Efficient Options

Orenco systems offer rock-solid wastewater treatment that’s built to last. Their AdvanTex® Technology uses a textile filter that traps and treats wastewater as it trickles through multiple passes. You’ll love how compact these units are — perfect for tight spaces.

The best thing about Orenco products is their modular design. You can easily add capacity without replacing your entire system. Their control panels give you real-time monitoring of your system’s performance, so you’ll spot issues before they become problems. They’re incredibly energy-efficient, too, cutting your electricity bills compared to conventional systems.
